Q. Can I use sex toys while I am pregnant?

A. As with most things, everyone’s pregnancy is very different. There are lots of women who choose to continue having sex while pregnant without risk. The important thing is to consult your doctor; if you are at risk for premature birth your doctor could advise you to avoid orgasm (can cause early contractions). However, if your doctor gives you the go ahead, sex toys are fine! Make sure you keep them clean, avoid mixing orifices, and don’t use too much pressure, but have a great time. If sex toys are a normal part of your sex life, and you have a healthy, uncomplicated pregnancy, then enjoy!

Q. Is it possible to catch a disease using someone else's toys?

A. Yes, your sex toys can get infected with an STD and they can also carry bacteria which causes certain type of vaginal infections. There are some precautions that can be taken to make sharing sex toys safer, but nothing is guaranteed. Using condoms on sex toys can help; however, the condom must be changed between orifices and partners.

If the sex toy in question is made of 100% medical grade silicone or glass you can boil it to sterilize, but note: this only means it’s clean for next time. Unless you are boiling between orifices and partners (and for heaven's sake allow for cooling time!) this isn’t going to work.

If you don’t know what materials were used in the toy, then be cautious.

Q. Can I put my toys in the dishwasher?

A. Glass and silicone dildos, with no vibrating parts, can be placed in the dishwasher
